Size: One size fits most - 6.5" / 16.5 cm circumference x 8" / 20.5 cm tall
Yarn: ~ 150 yards / 137 meters of sport weight yarn. 1 skein of Autumn and Indigo Local Sport - shown in light grey.
Needles: US 3 / 3.25mm 24-32" circular needles
Gauge: 12 sts x 20 rows = 2" / 5 cm in stockinette st
Notions: 2 stitch markers, scissors, scrap yarn, darning needle
Abbreviations:
C4B - Slip next 2 sts onto cable needle and hold to back, knit next 2 sts from left needle, then knit 2 sts from cable needle
C4F - Slip next 2 sts onto cable needle and hold to front, knit next 2 sts from left needle, then knit 2 sts from cable needle
CO - Cast On
K - Knit
Inc'd - Increased
M - Marker
P - Purl
PM - Place Marker
Rnd - Round
SM - Slip Marker
St(s) - Stitch(es)

 

Braided Cable Pattern (N1):
Round 1: k3, p3, k10, p3, k3
Round 2: k3, p3, k2, C4F, C4F, p3, k3
Round 3: k3, p3, k10, p3, k3
Round 4: k3, p3, C4B, C4B, k2, p3, k3

Instructions:

Right Mitt

CO 44 sts using the German Twisted Cast On Method. Join to knit in the round being careful not to twist.

Separate sts by placing 22 sts on each needle. This will separate the back of the mitten (N1) from the palm (N2). Beginning of N1 starts BOR.

Rnd 1: *k1, p1 ; repeat * until end

Repeat rnd 1 until ribbing measures 2” / 5 cm from cast on edge.

Next Rnd:

N1: Work rnd 1 of Braided Cable Pattern to end of needle;

N2: k all

Next Rnd:

N1: Work next rnd of Braided Cable Pattern to end of needle;

N2: k all

Repeat previous rnd 2 more times

Right Thumb Gusset

Increase Rnd 1:

N1: Work rnd 1 of Braided Cable Pattern to end of needle;

N2: k2, pm, m1l, pm, k to end of rnd. (1 st inc’d)

Next rnd:

N1: Work next rnd of Braided Cable Pattern to end of needle;

N2: k to end, slipping markers as you go

Increase Rnd 2:

N1: Work next rnd of Braided Cable Pattern to end of needle;

N2: k to m, sm, m1r, k to m, m1l, sm, k to end (2 sts inc’d)

Repeat last 2 rnds until you have 17 sts between the markers on N2. (61 sts)

Body:

Next Rnd:

N1: Work next rnd of Braided Cable Pattern

N2: k to first m, rm, transfer 17 sts to waste yarn, rm. k to end. (44 sts)

Next Rnd:

N1: Work next rnd of Braided Cable Pattern to end of needle;

N2: k to end

Repeat last rnd until piece measures appx 6” from cast on edge or .5” / 1.25 cm less than desired length

Ribbing:

Rnd 1: *k1, p1 ; repeat * until end

Repeat rnd 1 for .5”/1.25 cm or desired length

Bind off all sts in pattern.

Thumb:

Pick up 17 sts held on scrap yarn along with 1 st along the body of the mitten and join in the rnd. (18 sts)

Knit 4 rnds.

Rnds 5-6: *k1,p1 ; repeat * until end

Bind off all sts in pattern. Block as desired.

Left Mitt

Work as Right Mitt to beginning of Right Thumb Gusset

Left Thumb Gusset

Increase Rnd 1:

N1: Work Rnd 1 of Braided Cable Pattern to end of needle;

N2: k to last 2 sts, pm, m1l, pm, k to end (1 st inc’d)

Next Rnd:

N1: Work next rnd of Braided Cable Pattern to end of needle;

N2: k to end, slipping markers as needed

Increase Rnd 2:

N1: Work next rnd of Braided Cable Pattern to end of needle;

N2: k to marker, sm, m1r, k to marker, m1l, sm, k to end (2 sts inc’d)

Repeat last 2 rnds until you have 17 sts between markers on N2. (61 sts)
