The Trail 4 hat is a simple hat pattern, great for beginners and advanced knitters alike. This hat features a warm double brim, perfect for keeping the ears toasty on those blustery days.
Size:
4 sizes (small / 16", medium / 18", large / 20", x-large / 22") - worn with 2-4" of negative ease
Yarn:
1-2 skeins dk weight yarn (I used 1 skein of 231 yards / 100 g dk weight yarn held double)
130 yards lace weight yarn (Mohair or Suri)
*yarn is held triple throughout the entirety of the hat to create a chunky weight fabric. Alternative: You could always use 1 full skein and use about 40-50g of another color for the inside of the brim (first 3” or so of knitting)
You can always use about 150 yards of weight 5 chunky yarn as an alternative.
Needles:
US 8 / 5 mm 16” circular needles or dpns
US 9 / 5.5mm 16” circular needles or dpns
Spare 16” circular needles of similar size for provisional CO
Gauge:
14 sts x 22 rounds = 4” stockinette in the round on smaller needles
Abbreviations:
BOR - Beginning of Round
CO - Cast On
K - Knit
k2tog - knit 2 sts together
PM - place marker
Rnd(s) - round(s)
St(s) - stitch(es)
SSK - slip slip knit
Directions:
Brim:
Using smaller needles, crochet hook, and scrap yarn, CO 48 (60, 72, 84) sts using provisional cast on method. See notes. Join to knit in the round being careful not to twist stitches. PM to note BOR. *If you do not want to use the provisional cast on method, I recommend subbing in with the German twisted cast on method.
Knit in the round for approximately 6 inches / 15.5 cm.
Transfer provisionally cast on stitches to spare needle. Fold up cast on edge with WS together, align bor stitches, and carefully join stitches as follows:
Knit together 1 stitch from the front needle, and 1 stitch from the back needle. Continue around in this manner until all stitches have been knit off the back needle. You should now be back to the BOR.
Body:
Change to larger needle.
Continue knitting in the round until piece measures 8” / 20.5 cm or approximately 1” / 2.5 cm shorter than desired length.
Crown:
Round 1: *K1, k2tog, k1, ssk; repeat * until end of round (32 (40, 48, 56) sts) Round 2: k allRound 3: *k2tog, ssk ; repeat * until end of round (16 (20, 24, 28) sts)
