Early spring is always finicky in Southeast Idaho with days that go from calm, warm, and sunny to freezing, dumping snow, and sideways winds within a 24 hour time period. With that said, I usually try to hold off on direct sowing as long as I can, especially if my frost cloths aren't handy.
At the beginning of April I'm focusing on getting my cold weather plants going.
Start indoors and transplant out in late May.
Sunflowers
Pumpkins
Beans
Corn
Cucs
Squash
Watermelon
Other warm weather plants like flowers such as zinnias, asters, etc.
If you haven't already started your herbs, tomatoes, and peppers, now would be a good time to get those started too! I usually start those inside in mid-late March to get a head start on the season since our warm weather window is so short.
Direct sow:
Broccoli
Cauliflower
Cabbage
Lettuce
Spinach
Peas (I pre-sprout these to help germination)
Carrots
Basil
Remember you don't have to do it all! Pick a few favorites that you know you and your family will enjoy and start there. Happy gardening!
