Directions:

Toe:

Using Judy’s Magic Cast On, CO 8 sts to each needle (16 sts total)

PM to mark beginning of round

Set up round: k8, place sole/instep marker, k until end

Round 1: [k2, m1r, k until 2 st before marker, m1l, k2], sm, repeat [] once more (4 sts increased)
Round 2: knit all
Round 3: rep rnd 1
Round 4-5: k all

Repeat rounds 3-5 until 40 (44, 48, 52) sts are on the needles, ending with round 4.

If using magic loop method, place 20 (22, 24, 26) sts on each needle.

Foot:

You will be working in the round to create the instep (top of foot) and sole (bottom of foot). Slip markers as you encounter them.

Round 1: Over the first 20 (22, 24, 26) instep sts ; work the instep pattern repeat for your size, then knit the remaining 20 (22, 24, 26) sole sts in stockinette.

Repeat round 1 until foot measures 2.25 (2.5, 2.5, 2.75)” /  5.75 (6.5, 6.5, 7) cm from heel

Gusset:

Continue working in the round. You will be creating increases on the sole, and working the instep at the same time.

Round 1:

Instep: Work the first 20 (22, 24, 26) sts as established
Sole: Over the remaining sole sts ; k2, m1R, k until 2 sts remain, m1L, k2

Round 2:

Instep: Work the first 20 (22, 24, 26) sts as established
Sole: k all

Repeat Rounds 1 & 2 until 36 (40, 44, 48) sts are on the sole.

56 (62, 68, 74) sts total

Place a marker in the middle of the sole stitches. You should have 18 (20, 22, 24) sts on each side of the marker.

Heel Turn:

Begin the heel by working the first 20 (22, 24, 26) sts in the next round of pattern as established.

Now you’ll work short rows on the bottom of the foot stitches only.

Row 1 (RS): slipping the marker as you encounter it, k until 2 sts past marker, ssk, k1, turn.
Row 2 (WS): sl1, p until 2 sts past marker, p2tog, p1, turn. Remove marker.
Row 3: sl1, k to 1 st before gap, ssk, k1, turn
Row 4: sl1, p to 1 st before gap, p2tog, p1, turn

Repeat rows 3 & 4 in pattern until all sts are worked and 20 (22, 24, 26) sts remain on the sole, ending with row 4. After all decreases are completed, turn your work to continue working in the round.

*Note: Some sizes may not utilize all sts when working decreases. Double check your st count

Leg:

On the first round after the heel pick up one st at each one of the corners where the instep meets the bottom the foot. On the next round, k these sts together with the first and last stitch of the heel respectively. This closes the gap between the instep and foot so there won’t be a hole.

Knit 20 (22, 24, 26) sts for back of leg. You will be back at the original BOR.

Next Round (RS):

Work first 20 (22, 24, 26) as established, then knit the remaining 20 (22, 24, 26) back of leg sts in stockinette.

Continue working in pattern as established (ribbed pattern for instep, stockinette for back of leg) until leg measures 3” /  7.5 cm less than desired finished length

Cuff:

Adjust for 2x1 ribbing:

Size 1 & 4: dec 1 st (instep: work as established until 2 remain, k2tog ; back of leg: k1, p1, [k2, p1] to end)

Size 2: dec 2 sts (instep: k2tog, work as established until 2 of remain, ssk ; back of leg: p1, [k2, p1] to end)

Size 3: no change

Work [k2, p1] as established until cuff measures 3” / 2.5 cm or desired length.

Bind off loosely in pattern using a stretchy bind off of choice.

Weave in ends and block as desired
